In recent years, weddings have become more and more lavish affairs, with the average couple in Scotland spending more than £35,000 to celebrate their big day.
But I do wonder whether the current crisis will change how people choose to plan their nuptials in the future.
Self-isolation and social distancing have made us all more appreciative of the little things in life, and perhaps spending large sums of money on one big party won’t be quite as appealing once lockdown ends.
After all, the cost of one wedding could allow newlyweds to travel the world for many months or even put down a deposit on a home – both of which would provide many more happy memories than a grainy wedding video they might never watch.
What’s more, even if couples do want the fairytale wedding, the government has said there could still be restrictions on large gatherings for some time to come, meaning many will have to adjust their expectations.
Whatever way people decide to say “I do”, one thing is for sure – we’ll all appreciate being together with friends and family just that little bit more.
