A big-budget adaptation of a much-loved book about a fictional 1970s rock band based on the dramatic fallout of Fleetwood Mac?
I could barely wait to watch the first handful of episodes of Prime Video’s latest series Daisy Jones & The Six; it actually seems like one of those ideas which is impossible to get wrong.
It’s difficult to pinpoint what has gone awry with this series. The actors, especially Riley Keough and Sam Claflin, all look great and the chemistry between the band is pretty much there, at least.
Yet this is a mockumentary which lacks the proper bite of the real Fleetwood Mac story.
It always helped that they produced a stack of absolute classics while they were having a dramatic meltdown; the frisson between the band as they collapsed in on themselves was soundtracked with the likes of break-up bangers The Chain and Go Your Own Way.
The music in Daisy Jones & The Six sounds like something you’d hear after accidentally stumbling into a chronic Americana tribute during Celtic Connections.
The original songs are so sterile you could probably do surgery on them.
They don’t make it feel like you’re listening to the soundtrack of a generation as much as listening to the hold music for your local Kwik-Fit.
To quote Lindsey Buckingham in 1977, I’m Never Going Back Again.
