As the old saying goes, variety is the spice of life. And while there’s nobody who enjoys a traditional plain or fruit scone as much as me, it’s great when I stumble across somewhere experimenting with flavour.
This week, I’m back in Lanarkshire, this time in the historic town of Hamilton, once the fiefdom of the Dukes of Hamilton.
Wandering through the town centre, I spot Dnisi and, having heard the staff at this family-run establishment are somewhat expert in homebaked scones, decide to pop in.
The stone walls, leather seats and roaring fire at the back look so welcoming, I pull up a pew and peruse the menu.
I’m absolutely parched, so order a soup and sandwich combo at the counter and select a scone for after while I’m there.
Looking into the glass cabinet, I feel like I’m in the Scone Spy’s equivalent of heaven.
Alongside an array of mouthwatering biscuits and brownies, there’s the biggest selection of scones I have seen in a while.
Baskets are bursting with freshly baked cheese, plain, fruit and cherry ones.
But there are some unusual flavours in there, such as chocolate, orange and maple and bacon.
There’s even a nice iced gingerbread one, just to get visitors in the mood for Christmas!
It’s a tough choice, but eventually I plump for a fudge scone, a mix I have never even heard of, let alone tried.
The bowl of homemade tomato and basil soup with cheese sandwich on the side are delicious, which I think bodes well for the scone.
And it doesn’t disappoint. The huge sweet treat is firm on the outside, but soft inside. There’s no need for accompaniments, but I spoon a splodge of clotted cream on top, just to add to the flavour.
It’s no mean feat, but I savour every last crumb – and leave with a box of other flavours for friends to try. When something is this good, it would be rude not to share!
Variety certainly adds a new flavour to life…and it’s even better when it brightens up a Scone Spy’s adventures, too.
Such an amazing choice, so hard to pick only one!
