For most of us the mysterious happenings in the world of high finance are well beyond our ken.
Sometimes the people reporting on the FTSE 500 graph are smiling. This is good. Sometimes the pound is weak and they’re frowning. This is bad.
No one’s in charge and we puny humans must simply endure, like mediaeval serfs wondering why God has blighted all the turnips.
Yet no matter how red the graphs get, the Patrick Bateman types on Wall Street always seem to be all right, which hardly seems fair. Eat the Rich: The GameStop Saga outlines a moment a couple of years ago when Wall Street was screwed by some plucky outsiders on online forum Reddit. This fun documentary explains how big hedge funds, who bet struggling companies would fail, were outmanoeuvred by the little guy.
It’s all great fun and makes finances understandable via simple explanations and cat memes.
There’s a sting in the tail, of course. The mastermind behind the upstarts perhaps isn’t what he seems, and the disruption his army caused to the markets ended up damaging things like pensions. Probably your pension.
You will be entertained but also a little perplexed as to why things haven’t changed. Still, I’m sure this year’s turnip crop will be fine.
Now, to check the financial news…
