THE family of a murder victim whose lawyer tried to borrow tens of thousands of pounds left to them in inheritance has slammed a fresh probe into his conduct.
Solicitor William Renfrew was reprimanded by his governing body, the Law Society, again after holding on to £90,000 left after the murder of businessman Alex Blue that should have gone to his mother Kathleen and brother Billy.
The family had wanted to give the cash to a children’s cancer charity but the Glasgow lawyer asked to borrow the inheritance for his daughter, who he claimed wanted to buy a house in 2011.
The Blues refused and complained to the Law Society about his conduct.
It found Mr Renfrew – who is a former Partick Thistle footballer – was guilty of “unsatisfactory professional conduct” and fined him £500.
But the Blues were unhappy it had only upheld one out of 10 complaints so asked independent body the Scottish Legal Complaints Commission to resolve the complaint.
In 2015, that body said the original probe didn’t go far enough and ordered the Law Society to re-examine it as well pay £1500 to the Blues in compensation.
But in a new ruling, the Law Society has reached the same decision again – angering the Blue family.
Last night the family said the latest ruling was “a whitewash.”
