We’re used to seeing her doing stand-up or on panel shows but Canadian comic Katherine Ryan is quite literally the star of the show in the new sitcom she wrote for Netflix.
The Duchess is a six-part series about Katherine, a single mum, and one you wouldn’t want to clash with at the school gates. She’s brash, wears some of the craziest yet strangely cool outfits I’ve ever seen, and swears…a lot!
Just minutes into the first episode, after hearing another girl is bullying daughter Olive, Katherine marches up to horrified mum Jane (Sophie Fletcher) in the playground, knocks her takeaway coffee flying aross the street and launches into a foul-mouthed tirade…all while wearing fluffy-cuffed PJs and a crudely-sloganed sweatshirt.
It sets the tone for the rest of the show, which is littered with sharp wit and hilarious one-liners.
Katherine wants to have another baby by sperm donation, but is torn when it comes to choosing the father. Should it be Olive’s dad Shep (Rory Keenan), a failed boy band star, or current squeeze Evan, a handsome dentist who falls at her feet yet she brushes off at every opportunity?
It’s a wonder he sticks around but in fairness, Katherine is like Marmite. She’s that woman we love to hate but secretly envy.
Now, I’m off to find that sequined jacket and fluffy slippers for the school run…
