YESTERDAY saw the first snowfall of the 2017/18 season in the UK.
A climber on Ben Nevis, the country’s highest summit, posted a picture on Instagram of flakes lying on the mountainside.
Snow watcher Iain Cameron, who records the UK’s snowfall for The Royal Meteorological Society, shared the image on on Twitter, noting that it was the first sighting of the season.
He wrote: “HURRAH! Confirmation of the first UK snow of the 2017/18 season. Today 11.15am on Ben Nevis.”

He told The Sunday Post: “It’s about on time, normally snow falls in September and sometimes even late August. Nothing new in the date.
“It’s usually the Cairngorms that get the first blast and it may even have snowed on Ben Macdui, but I didn’t get that confirmed.”
Two patches of snow from last winter remain unmelted, but are expected to fade away soon.

Temperatures are set to plummet this weekend as bitter Arctic wind heads towards the UK.
The mercury will struggle to go above the low teens in the aftermath of Storm Aileen, with even a risk of early frost in the morning.
Drier and brighter conditions are set to follow next week, however, with temperatures expected to rise again.
