What is it with New York people? You know the type. They spend £16,000 for three days in The Big Apple wandering around a city which seems both miserable and entirely up itself.
Then they post an Instagram reel soundtracked by Alicia Keys’ Empire State Of Mind of them drinking a Manhattan (see what they did there?) on a loop.
The residents of the city appear entirely insufferable too, believing they live in the city where humanity has reached its evolutionary summit.
At least Fleishman Is In Trouble gets the insufferable part right.
Jesse Eisenberg and Clare Danes lead this comedy drama about a middle-class New York couple who split up and the subsequent fallout. Except the excellent Danes largely takes a backseat as the story of Fleishman and his sexual antics discovering the dating scene as a newly single fortysomething.
What starts out as a fairly boring sex comedy (and Fleishman has lots of flesh, man) turns into a fairly boring drama about how his marriage really broke down.
Eisenberg’s anxious doctor somehow didn’t really notice his wife’s mental health struggles.
You can’t help but feel the story would have been better told from the perspective of Danes’ much more compelling character.
Still, New York looks great; enjoy it on screen so you don’t have to go.
