SCOTLAND international Christophe Berra is Hearts boss Ian Cathro’s first summer signing.
The defender was club captain before leaving Hearts for Wolves in 2009, and rejoins the club on a pre-contract deal after being released from Ipswich.
The 32-year-old is likely to once again captain the side.
Hearts announced earlier that six players had been released by the club.
Tasos Avlonitis, Alex Tziolis, Lennard Sowah and Andraz Struna, all signed by rookie Jambos boss Cathro on six-month deals back in January, have been informed they will not be kept on after the club’s dismal second half to the season.
On-loan Stoke winger Moha Choulay will return to his parent club while youngster Dylan Bikey has also been released.
