A granny who is also a gangsta – what an amusing concept.
So David Walliams must have thought when he created the character. What he did there was smoosh two incongruous things together to hilarious effect, like a Timpsons on The Moon, or a bat made of cheese.
Gangsta Granny Strikes Again is the second adaptation of Walliams’ children’s novels, the first being broadcast back in 2013. The concept is this: a boy’s granny is a cat burglar. That’s about the long and short of it, unless you include a cloying bit about how we should all be kind to the elderly.
I don’t disagree with that sentiment. It’s just that, and I may be wrong, Walliams has tacked that on to give his tale a point.
Who knows, he might actually care about the elderly, rather than that idea just being a cynical and mechanical moral he added to his story. Perhaps we could ask the pensioner from Britain’s Got Talent (where Walliams is a judge) whom he called the worst sweary word three times when he thought his microphone was off?
Regardless, Gangsta Granny Strikes Again should stand on its own merits and if you’re looking for a nap then you could do worse than this.
Walliams’ writing is as limp as ever, with the funniest moment when a talent show judge falls on his backside. Sounds familiar, David.
