Halloween activities: Frighteningly fun days out for all the family this spooky season

Spooky season has arrived, and what better way to spend it than searching out ghosts, ghouls and monsters? Or picking pumpkins and mixing potions?

Here are some of the best Halloween days out Scotland has to offer.

Edinburgh Zoo Spooktacular

Head to Edinburgh Zoo (until October 31) and experience their spooktacular trail! Full of family-friendly characters and fun, their illuminated trail through the zoo is accompanied by tasty, themed food and drink kiosks for all to enjoy.

Loch Lomond Scary Faerie Trail

Something spooky is happening in the woods. The evil witch has cast a spell over our faeries, so the wizard needs your help to save them.

Trail through the forest and solve clues to discover what gruesome ingredients the wizard needs to create the magic potion. Drop your ingredients list into our bubbling cauldron at the finish point then visit the Pumpkin Patch where you can pick your own pumpkin .

Tamfest

This spooky family-friendly Halloween festival has been a favourite in the Ayrshire events calendar since 2015.

Join this unique get-together of fun, music and accessible arts throughout October, with spine-tingling, extravagant experiences for all.

Torchlight Maze, Cairnie Fruit Farm, Fife

Dare you enter the six-acre maze with a labyrinth of paths? As darkness falls you will only have a torch, so watch out for surprises that lurk in the shadows and hear the screams around you. October 29-31.

Pumpkin picking, Kilduff Farm, East Lothian

Head to Kilduff (Oct 15-30) to pick a pumpkin and visitors will also be able to handpick a selection of seasonal dahlias to make a beautifully assorted bouquet.

Families will relish a host of fun and games on the patch as well as scrumptious seasonal food and the opportunity to buy produce from Kilduff’s kitchen larder. With a bale maze, it is sure to be a wonderful day out.

Enchanted Forest, Tay Forest Park

The Enchanted Forest (until October 30) is Scotland’s largest autumn event, held in Faskally Woods. The trees and water around Loch Dunmore, a beautiful small lochan, are set with lights, art and sounds.

Visitors are taken to the forest by coaches, that depart from the centre of Pitlochry. Each year the Enchanted Forest of lights, attracts in the region of 80,000 people of all ages, to walk around this beautifully lit forest.

Loch Lomond Scary Faerie Trail

Pumpkin Festival, M&D’s, Lanarkshire

Hop aboard the pumpkin express train, enjoy a special Halloween theatre story, play Bash A Pumpkin and take part in some spooky arts and crafts before visiting the patch to pick your pumpkin.

The Real Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh

Explore Edinburgh’s dark history (October 15-31) with two new tours for Halloween season. Lantern Led Tours will take visitors on a journey underground by candlelight with a character tour guide and surprise special residents from the past.

Separating fact from fiction, True Crimes Tour will venture through Mary King’s Close’s blood-curdling past, including witch trials and the crimes of the infamous grave robbers and murderers, Burke and Hare.

Arnprior Farm, Stirling

There will be more than 15,000 pumpkins at Arnprior Farm, from huge Cinderella orange pumpkins to green warty pumpkins, beautiful white pumpkins and even funky stripy ones!

This year there’s also a chance to dig for tatties, pull your own turnip, plus local pop-up food trucks.

Did we mention there’s a horsebox gin truck for the grown-ups too?
