Ho Wong was originally established in 1986 in the city’s York Street and is still owned by the Chung family today in its new location.
Location
Right in the heart of Glasgow city centre, it’s well placed. Parking is a little tricky – and expensive – but there is plenty nearby.
First impressions
Simply stunning. The lavish decor, from the velvet chairs to the lighting and artwork on the walls, is bold, gorgeous and inviting.
Service
It’s a weekend and we haven’t booked, but the staff go out of their way to accommodate, finding us a spacious booth. Service is pleasant and prompt throughout. Outstanding in fact.
Menu
It’s a Chinese restaurant so all the favourites are there and it’s a pretty extensive menu so there’s plenty of choice. There’s soups, dim sum and a whole host of appetisers, as well as chicken and beef dishes, seafood, sizzling plates, vegetarian and sweet and sour and satays. You can also choose from a range of set menus.
Taste
We share yuk sung – savoury chicken in a lettuce leaf wrap – for starters and its absolutely delicious. The chicken with spicy honey sauce and fillet of beef with salt and chilli, with rice and noodles on the side, are tremendous. By far the best Chinese we have had in a long time.
Ambience
It’s busy, yet relaxing. We feel comfortable and not rushed. Could easily sit here for hours.
Price
At £140 for two adults and two children, it’s pricey (a boiled chicken breast for the children came in at almost £19 and a pint of orange and lemonade almost £7). But we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and would definitely come back again. A lovely treat.
