HOLLYWOOD star James McAvoy says he is happy that is not a screen sex symbol.
The X-Men actor said his average looks saved him from being typecast as a “heartthrob”.
The 39-year-old Scot will next be seen on screen in two superhero movies, Glass – playing a man with multiple personalities, and Dark Phoenix, reprising the role of mutant leader Professor Charles Xavier.
McAvoy, who also starred in Atonement and The Last King of Scotland, said: “I am not in the league of the better-looking actors.
“It allows me to play a wide variety of roles. No one says things like, ‘Is he ugly enough for this role?’ or whatever.
“People don’t typecast me in any role, because I think that I am fairly average as a human being to look at.
“It’s easier for me to go in any direction.”
McAvoy, who grew up in Drumchapel, Glasgow, said he is resigned to missing out on the big prizes, including the Academy Awards.
“I have been acting for 20 years and I am used to people telling me that I should have been nominated for this role or that role, but I am used to not being nominated.
“What matters to me is getting exciting work and wanting to do it every single day. I really don’t lose sleep over it.”
