Hundreds of children armed with water pistols turned out to drench a famous Charles Rennie Mackintosh house yesterday.
The fun project had a serious point – to check that a protective chainmail covering at the A-listed property is doing its job.
The Helensburgh property is considered to be the architect’s finest house but its porous outer surface has led to it soaking up water – putting its long-term survival in doubt.
A special covering, featuring 32 million chainmail links and known as the Hill House Box, was erected as part of a multi-million pound project to let the building dry out so conservation work can take place.
Caroline Smith, operations manager at The Hill House, said afterwards: “The mesh worked perfectly and despite the efforts of the finest collection of water pistol sharpshooters I’ve ever seen, not one drop got to the house.”
