THOUSANDS of people took to the streets last night as protests were held across Scotland against US President Donald Trump’s travel ban.
Protesters flocked to major cities and towns from the early afternoon to object to the president’s treatment of people from Muslim countries.
Crowds flocked to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Dundee and Kirkwall on Monday evening and social media lit up with the hashtag #ScotlandAgainstTrump.
Stand Up To Racism Scotland organised the events in Glasgow and Edinburgh under the banner No Hate, No Fear, Stop Trump’s Ban on Muslims and Refugees.
Placards read “No Hate, No Fear, Donald Trump’s not welcome here”, while others said “Let history know we are not complacent” and “Love Trumps hate”.
At the Glasgow protest, Angela Baron, 39, of Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, carried a “No Muslim Ban” placard. She said: “I totally oppose this Muslim ban that Trump is trying to implement. It’s completely illegal, it’s totally immoral.
“It’s actually ridiculous, Muslim people are just people and it’s blatant discrimination.
“I think we are quite progressive and multicultural here in Glasgow so I’m hoping we’ll see a lot more people coming out in opposition of the ban.
“I feel strongly about the ban, It’s only the second time in my life I’ve come out to a protest.”
The event was also attended by representatives from Socialist Worker, Glasgow Buddhist Centre and Global Justice and featured several speakers including Scots comedian Janey Godley.
Mr Trump signed an executive order on Friday banning entry to the US for nationals of seven Muslim-majority countries – Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen – for 90 days.
The order also suspended the US refugee programme for 120 days and banned Syrian refugees from the country indefinitely.
Representatives of several of the countries attended the demonstrations which featured chants supporting refugees.
Veronica Tudhope of the Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament said: “I’m coming here on the way home from work because I think it’s a cause that needs support and because I think Donald Trump is bringing us closer to nuclear disaster than any of his predecessors did.
“We are not the only demonstration, there’s demonstrations all over Scotland tonight, not just in Glasgow and Edinburgh.”
