A British man has been arrested on the Isle of Man for breaking quarantine rules.

The 26-year-old arrived to the island by boat yesterday but failed to follow the Isle of Man Government’s new requirements which instruct arrivals to self-isolate for 14 days.

Under the Manx Government’s rules, the man could face three months in jail or a £10,000 fine.

Police said: “We currently have one male in police custody for failing to adhere to the new legislation requiring him to self isolate.

“Please follow the guidance issued by the Government and think about the safety of the community.

“This is an ever evolving situation and it is important we act in the best interests of keeping people safe.”

They added that the man is being held in a special custodial area designed for those who should be self isolating.

The arrest was made on the same day the Isle of Man confirmed its first case of the virus.

The Isle of Man Government stated: “A patient on the island has tested positive for coronavirus.

“The patient had recently returned to the Isle of Man from a trip to Spain.

“The public health team has been in touch with the patient to provide advice and support, and will start contact tracing.”

There are now 3,269 confirmed UK coronavirus cases, 266 of which are in Scotland.
