Kenny Dalglish: Any club would be fortunate to get Steven Gerrard as manager – when he’s ready for it

STEVIE GERRARD is a man I know well and have huge respect for.

I was his manager at Liverpool and he was my captain.

He was an outstanding footballer, an inspirational leader and a fine man.

At the moment, he appears to be the front-runner to become the next manager of Rangers.

To be honest, I don’t have a clue if he will or will not follow Graeme Murty as the next gaffer.

Any discussions on any such should move should be between Steven, his family and Rangers Football Club.

I have always been of the opinion that kind of thing should remain private, and the media and wider public will be informed when the time is right.

So it wouldn’t be fair of me to comment purely on his link with the Rangers job.

But what I will say, in general terms, is that any club would be very fortunate to get Stevie on board as manager.

Sure, he lacks managerial experience at the highest level, of course he does.

But he will be an asset, I’m absolutely certain about that.

He knows the game inside out and he commands respect.

In his role coaching the youth team at Liverpool, he has been first-class.

He is very good on the training ground, and it gives any footballer a lift to have Stevie Gerrard working with them and trying to improve them on a daily basis.

Only Stevie will know when he is ready to take the next step into managing at a higher level.

I’m led to believe he has had offers in the past from English clubs, but decided to stay put.

Whether he feels now that the time is right to move up the ladder remains to be seen.

But I’m confident that when he takes that next step, he will become a very good manager.

And a successful one.
