KENNY DALGLISH reckons Andy Robertson is one of the leading candidates to replace Scott Brown as Scotland captain.
In his column in today’s Sunday Post, the Liverpool legend tipped the Reds defender to take on the mantle for the national team.
“The skipper should be someone who is going to play on a regular basis, one of the first names on the team sheet,” he said.
“He should also be able to cope with the responsibility and not allow the weight of the armband to affect his game.
“If you were to ask me if I think Andy Robertson should be considered, I’d have to say ‘yes’.”
Alex McLeish will name his first Scotland squad on Wednesday ahead of the friendly against Costa Rica on March 23 at Hampden.
Dalglish admits he was disappointed to see Brown announced his retirement, but reckons Robertson would be up for the task.
He added: “He has been excellent for Liverpool and is playing in one of the best leagues in the world and also performing brilliantly in the Champions League.
“I would imagine he would be one of the leading candidates for the role.
“I don’t know the other players in the squad well enough to comment on their attributes, but I do know a wee bit about Andy.
“However, it’s up to Alex – and I’m sure he’ll make the right call.”
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has also backed calls for Robertson to be given the armband.
He said: “He had a close relationship with all the boys here from the start so you could see he would be leading in the future. Scotland cannot make a mistake choosing Robbo.
“Being from the first line-up of Liverpool players is a message as well. There are not many Scotland players at other top clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United.
“So yes, he’d be a good choice as Scotland national team captain. If they pick him I’d have no problem with that.”
