The West Highland Way runs right by the Kingshouse Hotel, which has been a place for weary travellers to stop since the 1750s.
Location
The Kingshouse has to have the one of the best locations in Scotland, if not the UK. Sitting directly under the might Buachaille Etive Mor, the view from the restaurant is unbeatable.
First impressions
The hotel Scandi-style wood and glass exterior set the scene and, inside, the theme continues, with natural stone, wood and glass giving the effect of a very opulent Alpine lodge.
Service
The Kingshouse is always busy, so booking is a recommended, even in the off season. That said, the service was very professional and friendly. The hotel aims for a fine dining level of service.
Menu
Changes monthly and attempts to use the best of the local produce. From Ramsay of Carluke haggis to Mull cheddar. The menu is kept simple – something I always take as the sign of a good restaurant.
Taste
We had braised poussin with white wine, mushroom and bacon cream on brown butter and garlic mash. The poussin was delicate and tasty while the mash was creamy and light. Delicious and moreish. We had children with us and they opted for the mac and cheese. A winner all round.
Ambience
The Kingshouse is right on the tourist trail so expect everyone from hikers and skiers to international jet-setters and more local visitors. The vibe is relaxed, despite the restaurant’s fine dining vibe and most of the chatter among guests is about the stunning view of the Buachaille and the fabulous food.
Price
Considering its location and demand, the prices are reasonable. We had four mains with soft drinks and our bill for four, including two children, came in under £60.
