“DINNAE. Some people would think it’s related to dinner.. but it’s not.”
If you’ve ever wanted to get your head around the Glaswegian dialect, then this video is for you.
YouTube star KoreanBilly has uploaded his video guide to ‘Weegie Patter’, explaining in detail the meaning behind words like ‘baltic’, ‘pure’ and ‘hoachin’.
The 25-year-old vlogger from Seoul, real name Seong-Jae Kong, has amassed a huge online following through his videos exploring dialects of his homeland and also the UK.
His take on Scouse proved a big hit and he has also tackled the local tongues of Wales, Newcastle, Yorkshire and Manchester.
In his latest offering, he explains that “Weegie can be both used as a noun and an adjective” and that “when you want to emphasise the meaning you can use the word pure”.
He also reveals to the world the true meaning of ‘Ginger’ and how to use ‘awright’ in a sentence.
He told the Sunday Post: “I’ve been to Glasgow twice and I really liked my trip.
“The background pictures at the beginning of the video are the pictures I took while travelling there.
“All the Glaswegian people were very nice to me!”
During his visit, Kong was fascinated by the accent and the different dialect he could hear around him.
He’s hoping to cover more of the country in his videos too.
“Scotland is a big country,” he says.
“I understand that each region has their own characteristics including their dialect, so I think I’ll have to discover more Scottish dialects!”
But the big question is, what was his favourite word?
“I really love the word ‘Weegie’,” he says.
“I guess it’s one of the most Glaswegian dialect words since this word itself means ‘Glaswegian’, and ‘Weegie’ also sounds cute to me!”
