Scotland’s only Labour MP Ian Murray has apologised for the way his party treated the Jewish community.
Mr Murray was appointed shadow Scottish secretary in new leader Kier Starmer’s reshuffle.
Mr Starmer also apologised to the Jewish community following his election as successor to Jeremy Corbyn last week.
The Labour Party is under investigation by the Equality and Human Rights Commission over allegations of institutional anti-Semitism in handling complaints.
Mr Murray has written to the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities (SCoJeC ) to offer a “heartfelt and meaningful apology for the appalling way the Labour Party treated the Jewish community”.
In the letter to SCoJeC chair Micheline Brannan and director Ephraim Borowski, Mr Murray said: “Never again do I want any Jewish person to feel they do not have a home in the Labour Party, that they can’t trust us to do the right thing, or feel our party would make the country a more dangerous place for them.
“I would be very keen to continue the dialogue, to bring you up to date on how the Labour Party will be positively engaging with the Jewish community in future.”
