When I was wee, my mum enrolled me for ballet lessons at a dance school in Stirling.
I can’t actually remember whether I liked it or not but my dreams of becoming the next Anna Pavlova were short lived after I was removed from class for being a “disruptive influence” on the other children. My mother was mortified.
I still remember the six basic positions, and I am now wondering if it’s time for me to make a comeback, as more and more adults are stepping up to the barre to improve their fitness.
This week, the Duchess of Cornwall revealed she has been practising ballet for more than a year and a half, joining classes specially designed for over-55s, and journalist Angela Rippon also spoke fondly of her lifetime passion for plies.
If anyone is a walking advert for the benefits of ballet, it’s Angela – she’s in great shape for someone half her age, never mind in their 70s. Since my stint on Strictly, I do really enjoy dance workouts as well as yoga.
But you don’t have to join a hard workout or master a pirouette to stay fit. Bopping freestyle around the living room is a great option.
So, why not pop on your favourite tunes and dance like no one’s watching?
