Magnet fishing has been allowed on Scotland’s canals with enthusiasts picking up a bumper haul at the first official event.
A safe complete with its back cut out, a handful of bullets and a child’s scooter were among the items dragged from Union Canal, Edinburgh yesterday. The safe was pulled out by John Robertson, 65.
The national body, Official Magnet Fishing Scotland, was given permission to trawl the canal after a ban was lifted.
Further applications are being submitted for Inverness and Glasgow which would allow more participants to fish out metal objects while helping keep inland waterways clean.
Calum Black, chairman of the group, said: “Magnet fishing has become hugely popular.”
