Gran of 10 Anne Masterson, 64, lives a life filled with adventure. Action woman Anne has tried her hand at everything from sailing and hot air ballooning, to skiing and swimming with elephants.
She and her husband Kevin, who have three children together, divide their time between the UK and Greece where they vacation aboard their yacht.
Adventures at sea
My husband thought I would like dinghy sailing but he got it wrong. I have a fear of water and don’t even put my head under the shower. Luckily for him, I grew to like bigger boats. We now keep our own 35ft Etap yacht in Lefkas and spend as much time there as possible. A couple of years ago, I qualified for my day skipper certificate, which means if Kevin isn’t paying attention I could take the boat out myself. We love island-hopping around the Ionian Sea but also enjoy the longer trips to Malta, Sicily and Italy.
Far-flung family
Getting my grandchildren all in one place is like trying to round up kittens. I am so proud of every one of them. They keep me young! Here I am in Corfu with Emma and Ben Reid and Alex Smith. I am a scaredy-cat but if one of them asks me to do something legal then I will try, to their enjoyment or, most often, their embarrassment.
Swimming trunks
Our family loves to travel. When I married Kevin 10 years ago in Lockerbie, we took 25 relatives on our honeymoon to Ireland. We often go camping and, on one occasion, we were asked which youth club we were from…there were 18 of us squeezed into three tents but we had a ball. Earlier this year we travelled to Thailand where we got to feed and swim with rescue elephants. It was absolutely fantastic.
Up, up and away
Just after my 50th birthday, Kevin tried to introduce me to skiing, not taking into account my fear of heights. I’ve tried paragliding in the USA to try to conquer that fear and clung on for grim death. I’ve also stood on the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, where I glued myself to the back wall. I’ve also been hot air ballooning in Morocco. Terrified, I kept my hands over my eyes but I did it! Here we are with our cerficicates.
