SCOTLAND’S Social Security Minister has been asked to support mesh victims to ensure they receive benefits because of their injuries.

SNP MSP Rona Mackay is campaigning to ensure the Department for Work and Pensions recognise mesh injuries as a disability to save sufferers from distress during Personal Independence Payment claims, and has asked Scottish Social Security Minister Jeane Freeman to intervene.

Doctors saved £200 on my surgery but it cost me two organs and destroyed my life

She said: “Hundreds of women in Scotland have had their lives ruined by this mesh procedure which, despite being the subject of a moratorium in 2014, is still being used. I would like a complete ban on the use of mesh before more women suffer. Mesh injuries should be recognised by the DWP when it comes to benefits.

“I have written to Jeane Freeman to ask if she will consider this when PIP payments become devolved to Scotland. In the meantime, the DWP should take this on board immediately.”

Despite some implants being withdrawn in the US, and others being removed from hospitals in Australia and New Zealand, manufacturers are still offering the same devices here in the UK.
