Based in Aberdeenshire, Laura Phillips is always on the hunt for new dog-friendly spots in the north-east and beyond to take her Chihuahua, Teddy.

We asked her for the top spots she has found recently, all of which are approved by her furry friend of course.

Prince Albert’s Cairn

Teddy was very impressed. Image: Laura Phillips

Located on the Balmoral estate, Prince Albert’s Cairn brings a touch of Egypt to Scotland. There are 16 stone cairns in total, but this is the largest and most impressive featuring a sweet plaque to Albert from “his broken hearted widow”, Queen Victoria.

The four-mile loop is quite steep in places but the climb is totally worth it, and as the pyramid comes into sight you’re treated to stunning views of Aberdeenshire. The dog-friendly walk is open all year round even when the Royals are in residence, so this secret Scottish pyramid is definitely one to add to the list for your next trip to Ballater.

Stonehaven

Don’t skip a trip to the castle. Image: Laura Phillips

A pretty coastal town just 25 minutes from Aberdeen, Stonehaven has so much to see and do. Dunnottar Castle is probably Stonehaven’s most well-known attraction, with lots to discover inside this dramatic cliff-top ruin. For a dog-friendly lunch I would recommend The Ship Inn which sits right on the harbour front. You must try their seafood platters, they’re fantastic.

A trip to Stonehaven wouldn’t be complete without an ice cream from Aunty Betty’s. They have almost every flavour and topping you can think of, and even have little doggy ice creams too.

Caledonian Cabins

Perfect for a cosy autumnal getaway. Image: Laura Phillips

A luxurious dog-friendly log cabin in the woods, we spent a gorgeous few days here after our wedding. About an hour’s drive from Inverness, The Cabin is the perfect place to relax and unwind by making the most of the wood burner, comfy sofas and hot tub.

There are three properties on site, but when staying in The Cabin you also have access to a separate pod overlooking Loch Garry, which is ideal for enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. The accommodation is beautiful with lots of homely touches – I hope we can return again soon.
