There is nothing quite like a huge hot chocolate to warm you right through at this time of year.

Whether you like yours as it comes or piled high with whipped cream and marshmallows, there are lots of delicious options to choose from.

We asked food and drink writer Julia Bryce for her top spots this winter so you can bear them in mind next time you are in need of a hot chocolate fix.

Fat Batch – Aberdeen

If you’re looking for a hot chocolate that doubles as a meal, then the Cookie S’more hot chocolate from Aberdeen’s Fat Batch is a must. Topped with one of their homemade cookies and toasted marshmallow fluff, this is a monstrous work of art that will leave you riding a sugar high.

It tastes delicious, and there’s also Terry’s Chocolate Orange and Biscoff versions you can enjoy, too.

Chocolates of Glenshiel – Kyle

Indulgent, sweet and made with beautifully crafted Highland chocolate, you won’t find another hot chocolate like this in the Glenshiel area.

Founded by Findlay MacDonald, there’s a whole host of locally sourced ingredients in his Chocolates of Glenshiel collections that nod to Scotland’s larder, but if you do anything, make sure you order a hot chocolate while visiting. Made with his own chocolate, this is luxury in a mug.

It’s also a perfect pitstop for those heading to Skye.

Iain Burnett The Highland Chocolatier – Grandtully, Pitlochry

Awarded Europe’s Best at the International Chocolate Awards, be sure to try out one of the 11 hot chocolates available here, all made with Iain’s award-winning velvet ganache.

Chocolate lovers can indulge in the richest hot chocolate with a thick, smooth, velvety mouthful which further adds to the experience at the chocolate shop in Grandtully.

Made with melted truffle you can try it as dark, marbled, white, with fruit or spice infusions, salted caramel or raspberry, making it customisable to your tastes. This craftsmanship is well worth indulging over.
