Lucy Cooke is a forager and co-presenter on BBC Alba’s new foraging programme Rùrachd.
She runs her business offering foraging walks and experiences throughout Scotland from her home base in Ardnamurchan in the Highlands. As an expert on the wild Scottish Larder, we asked Lucy for her favourite Scottish spots to go gathering.
The Cairngorms
If I could be transported to one location in Scotland during the Autumn, it would always be deep in the heart of the Cairngorm forests. It gives me chanterelles, blaeberries, giant Scot’s pines and juniper. The great expanse of ancient woodland allows you to wander quietly and encourages you to tread carefully through such a special place.
Port Appin
My favourite place would be my beautiful Port Appin on the shores of Loch Linnhe in Argyll, a home from home which feels like a warm hug at the end of the road. I have run courses in partnership with The Pierhouse Hotel for several years, so I know all the pathways, the plants and the special places. There is something very comforting and rewarding about showing them to guests. The food is not too bad either!!
Isle of Skye
I adore teaching and foraging on the Isle of Skye. The land and seascapes are varied and interesting, contributing to a wonderful selection of foraged ingredients. The island is also home to many food and drink producers, crafters and artisans. Everywhere you look there is inspiration. The best part is that many folk are cultivating a local, mindful and sustainable approach to food.
