Hosted by wildlife filmmaker Mandi Stark, the Natural Wanders podcast takes the popular radio interview format out of the studio and into the wild, as inspiring guests from a range of backgrounds lace up their walking boots for a ramble and a natter.
While taking an “exploratory plod” around a natural place close to their heart – from parks and gardens to riverbanks and coastlines – interviewees discuss their life, careers and passions, with a particular focus on the power of nature.
Stark, now Bristol-based but originally from Fife, has worked on such nature documentaries as David Attenborough’s The Hunt, which aired on BBC1, and Our Planet for Netflix. It was while working in far-flung locations that the idea for the podcast took shape.
“I’ve been lucky to travel to some extraordinary places,” explains Stark as she opens each episode of the podcast. “But it’s often the people who have made the journey so incredible. From the fantastically talented crews I’ve worked with, to the scientists and locals I’ve met along the way, in the countless hours I’ve spent waiting for animals to show up, I’ve learned how differently we connect with people when we share time together in nature.”
Previous guests include adventurer Aldo Kane, who chats about life beyond the Commandos, mental health and breaking into TV, while walking the Avon Gorge, and wildlife cameraman and presenter Gordon Buchanan, who opens the second series of the show with a tour of the banks of Loch Lomond, while delving into his impressive 30-year career.
Warm, funny, and full of heart, the gentle rhythm of each episode, combined with Stark’s insightful questions, make Natural Wanders a must-listen for nature lovers and city dwellers alike.
