4,000 deaths have now been registered in Scotland with Covid-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
Weekly figures released by National Records Scotland (NRS) showed that there were 89 deaths linked to coronavirus in the week of June 1 to June 7, down from 131 the previous week.
It’s the sixth weekly reduction in a row, with weekly deaths peaking at 659 between April 20 and April 26.
Sunday and Monday saw no deaths recorded in the daily figures, which differ in the weekly statistics in that they only count those with a positive test for Covid-19.
But across Tuesday and Wednesday, a total of 19 deaths occurred, taking the total under that measurement to 2,434.
With these deaths added in to the NRS figure, it takes the total over 4,000.
#NRSStats show that between weeks 12 – 23 there were 82% more deaths in care homes than the average over the last five years, between 1st to 7th June this has dropped to just above average levels with 21 excess deaths in care homes in week 23 https://t.co/Ku0qgjLAn2 pic.twitter.com/btY6ic4CW5

Meanwhile, a total of 741 contacts have been traced through Test and Protect scheme in Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon has said.
Speaking at First Minister’s Questions at the Scottish Parliament, the First Minister said these contacts have been traced between the scheme being launched on May 28 and June 7.
She said in 681 cases reported where a person tested positive for Covid-19 in this period, contact tracing has been completed for 481 cases with others currently ongoing.
What the NRS figures show
- A decrease of 42 deaths from the previous week (25th to 31st May), the sixth weekly reduction in a row
- 8% of all deaths registered last week involved Covid-19, a proportion that has fallen from a peak of 36% in April
- 47% of Covid-19 deaths registered to date related to deaths in care homes
- 46% of deaths were in hospitals
- 7% of deaths were at home or non-institutional settings
- The number of deaths in care homes fell for a sixth week, by 27 to 42
- Three quarters (76%) of all deaths involving Covid-19 to date were of people aged 75 or over
Why this data differs from daily updates
The weekly figures differ to the daily numbers announced by Nicola Sturgeon at her press briefings as they also include deaths where there has not been a positive test for Covid-19, but it is a suspected or presumed factor.
The First Minister’s daily figures only record deaths of patients who have tested positive for coronavirus.
By that measurement, there have been 19 deaths this week, 12 in the past 24 hours.
Scottish Government Covid-19 statistics, June 10:
