Peaky Blinders looked every inch the cult hit when it arrived back in 2013; a curiosity destined for a couple of series on BBC2 rather than the cultural phenomenon it has become.
I wonder how the original, real-life members of the Birmingham gang of thugs would react wandering into a modern Tesco and witnessing a hipster dad with an undercut buying “By Order Of The Peaky Blinders” T-shirts along with brillo pads and oven chips?
The final series before the inevitable spin-off (Niddrie Young Team, perhaps?) arrived with the series’ typically anachronistic, scuzzy blues rock soundtrack, and Tommy, played by Cillian Murphy, in a right scunner, as always.
With enemies on all sides, he decided to make more by heading across the Atlantic to forge a path for Chinese opium. This involves scheming with the Boston mafia and their enemies, which is bound to go swimmingly: as in, some of the crew might end up taking a dip with concrete boots.
Poor Helen McCrory died last year meaning Aunt Polly was taken out in the first few minutes, leaving Tommy without her vampish counsel.
Taking up the reins of stylish siren is Anya Taylor-Joy as Gina. Her scheming is only matched by her glorious swagger as a Depression-era moll.
She might even make it to the spin-off. Enjoy Niddrie, Anya.
