He was a figure who inspired terror in California.

Over the course of two decades, the man nicknamed The Cordova Cat, the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, the Creek Killer, the Diamond Knot Killer, the original Night Stalker and, most famously, the Golden State Killer evaded capture.

He commited burglaries, animal killings, rapes and, finally, murders.

Some feared the Golden State Killer had died before being brought to justice.

Now, Joseph James DeAngelo Jr is awaiting trial accused of 13 murders and 225 other home invasions, including 50 rapes dating from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s.

To understand the makings of a suspected killer, the Los Angeles Times interviewed his teenage fiancée, his family and friends, and the detectives who pieced together a broad spectrum of disturbingly similar crimes for this hit podcast.

Paige St. John, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, has uncovered never-before-revealed details about the man suspected of being one of California’s most deadly killers.

“DeAngelo came out of the blue. He was never a suspect and had lived a quiet, largely unnoticed life,” said Paige.

“The original case detectives were very candid with me, sharing their frustrations as they tried to navigate the obstacles to their investigations.

“I was moved by the depth to which they care about this case and want to find something to give the victims justice.”
