Classic satirical puppet show Spitting Image is being revived after 23 years, its creator confirmed yesterday.
The pilot for the relaunch features versions of leading figures such as President Donald Trump and Russian premier Vladimir Putin. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and musician Kanye West are also among those who will be portrayed.
Roger Law, the show’s co-creator, said: “It’s pretty chaotic out there. It’s better than shouting at the television set, isn’t it?”
The comedy became a huge hit in the 1980s and early ’90s with its parodies of leading British politicians – including an entirely grey John Major and a domineering Margaret Thatcher.
The original Spitting Image also once featured a parody song entitled Bonnie Scotland sung by a tartan-clad figure who concluded he didn’t like the country “except for the curry, the fights and the vomit”.
The show originally aired in 1984 and ended 12 years later. However, a pilot for a new version has already been filmed. Law said that mocking Trump was a challenge, stating: “I’ve heard other satirists say that he’s unsatirisable because he’s a satire in himself.
“Well, actually, with puppets you can go much, much further.”
He described the Trump puppet as “an absolute monster”.
