Charities, community groups and union leaders have made a joint plea to political parties to eradicate “hate speech” during the European election campaign.
More than 30 organisations, including the TUC, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and Amnesty International, have signed a statement urging politicians to stand up to unlawful speech.
It also calls on local authorities to publicly correct any false claims made by candidates that could stir up divisions in communities.
TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “There is no room for racism, misogyny or any other form of hatred during or after these elections.
“We hope politicians and civic society will join us in calling for a respectful campaign.”
