Prime Minister Boris Johnson and girlfriend Carrie Symonds yesterday announced they are engaged and having a baby.
Mr Johnson has four grown-up children with first wife Maria Wheeler, who last week was given the go ahead to apply for a divorce decree.
Their children are Lara, Milo, Cassie and Theodore, and the couple were together for 25 years. Mr Johnson, 55, also has another child, a daughter, after an affair. In November, he refused to say how many children he had during a radio phone-in when a caller criticised him for one of his old magazine columns, when he called the children of single mothers “ill-raised, ignorant, aggressive and illegitimate”.
It will be a first baby for Ms Symonds, 31. The couple, who have been living together in No 10 Downing Street for the last 10 months, recently adopted a dog, Dilyn.
The last child born to a prime minister was in 2010 when David and Samantha Cameron had baby Florence.
Carrie has employed an aide to help her transition to first lady, and it is expected she will be more in the public eye.
It is not yet known if the couple will marry before their baby is born. If they wait, Ms Symonds will be the first unmarried mother in Downing Street.
A spokesperson said: “The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds are very pleased to announce their engagement and that they are expecting a baby in the early summer.”
