What will you be doing at the Ideal Home Show?
Some lovely food, including my favourite Yorkshire pudding and a quick stir-fry goulash. And also talking about food and table etiquette. I’ve found people really engage with that. It’s not old-fashioned, it’s politeness.
Do you enjoy doing food show presentations?
I love them. I get as much out of meeting people as I hope they get out of meeting me. I’m very grateful for where I am and I know it’s because of people tuning in and supporting me.
You had a cookery school on the Isle of Harris. How much did that mean to you?
I loved it. It was at Amhuinnsuidhe Castle but after six years all good things had to come to an end, unfortunately. The family sold up and I, sadly, had to move on.
What did you love about Harris?
The peacefulness, the solitude and the lack of people. And with all the local produce it was a chef’s paradise. My good friend Miriam Margolyes was there recently and I got her to meet my favourite person, Effie Morrison. She makes the best clootie dumpling and scones in Scotland. She taught me how to bake, how to be light with your fingers and not to play with stuff.
What have you taken from your Real Marigold Hotel trips?
I never thought I’d get to India or the Far East, I thought they’d pass me by in life. The visits taught me how bad we are at looking after the elderly in this country. It’s as if we think they have nothing to offer us, while in those countries the older generation are really valued.
Which well-known cookery names do you run into at events?
Well, great people such as Mary Berry. I very much admire her. I did a programme with her many years ago and we were competing to make the best cake – she won!
Are you a feisty person?
I’d say I was kind and polite, not feisty. But I hate procrastination. I’m impatient and like things done straight away.
You did I’m A Celebrity…. Get Me Out Of Here! Any regrets?
Not at all, it was an honour to be asked. It was hard, but people saw me for who I am. I’m sure there are people who don’t like me, but I can’t do anything about that.
What would you still like to do?
I want to try more outdoorsy stuff. I’d like to have a shot at scuba diving and kayaking.
