IT’s the night when the finest parade in their finest … or not!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit doesn’t sound like a very exciting affair.
But it’s probably the hottest night in the showbiz calendar.
The Met Gala, as it’s more commonly known, is held at a museum in New York.
The clothing section of the museum – that’s right, it’s so big it has its own costume collection – has to fund itself.
So the department came up with a great idea – hold a black tie extravaganza.
Fashion? New York? Raising money?
It’s no surprise the Met Gala, billed as the East Coast Oscars, is a hit.
And the best bit? There are fashion triumphs and disasters galore.
Capes, drapes, funny shapes…as well as plenty of tape.
Celebs lined up to strut down the red carpet – A-listers like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Nikki Minaj, Rita Ora and Jennifer Lopez were all there.
You tend to see more elegant evening gowns at the Oscars whereas, at the Met Ball, the stars choose some really, erm, adventurous outfits.
But I’m going to resist saying who had a fashion disaster. It would be too easy to say that one celeb looked like she was wearing an explosion in an Andrex factory and should have had a Labrador puppy as an accessory.
Or that someone else looked like they’d been attacked by an angry red sleeping bag.
Nope, not me. Given I was once made to dress as a drag act for Good Morning Britain, I know how difficult it is to squeeze into a slinky dress!
So you won’t hear me comment on fashion at all now.
The last time I did I asked Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue, for some advice on style.
She took me to one side … and left me there!
On arrival at the £25,000-a-ticket Gala, everyone goes over to Anna to air-kiss her. I had to double-check I’d written “air”, there…
The theme of this year’s event was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.
How annoying! That was going to be the theme of my birthday party this year.
I’m not charging £25,000, though.
All I request is you bring your own cerry-oot and promise to smoke out on the porch.
