The royal visit to Jamaica has possibly been a little too action-packed for William and Kate.
The usual warm welcome and celebrations of Jamaican culture and heritage have been punctuated with equally sincere protests against the royals and, more specifically, their role in Britain’s colonial past.
Campaigners have been keen to use the visit to make their point about how royal wealth came at great cost to Jamaican people whose ancestors suffered through centuries of slavery and ill-treatment while making the former colony, and those who ran it, extremely rich.
I’ve no doubt it will have troubled the royal couple. They rarely put a foot wrong and have a huge sense of patriotism, community and family. You can’t change history, but you can recognise that certain events and behaviours were wrong and must never be repeated.
William was right to come out and denounce slavery as abhorrent. Only by learning from the past and acknowledging the mistakes can we move forward with a shared trust and confidence.
