YOU wouldn’t believe how many times I’ve passed Louie Brown’s and wondered what it’s like.
I’ve been told you get a decent scone in there and that the coffee that goes with it slips down a treat, too.
For one reason or another, I’ve never quite got round to it. It’s life, isn’t it?
And I have no plans to visit today, either. You see, I’ve just been out for a special lunch.
Special why? Well, lovely scone fans, let’s just say I am 21 again.
I still look it. In the dark, anyway.
So I’m not that hungry.
Neither are my two companions. But one of them has the devil in her and suggests we stop at Louie’s anyway and check it out.
“Come on. Life’s too short!” she points out.
The sensible spy – the one who remembers their expanding waistline – says no.
But no one ever listens to their sensible side on a day out, do they?
So before you know it, I’m standing at the counter in their lovely cafe section and checking out all the goodies.
The scones look good – big, lightly browned and hearty.
But it’s the tablet that catches my eye. It’s a Scottish delicacy, I’m sure you’ll agree.
But there’s tablet and there’s tablet. It can be golden, melt-in-the-mouth gorgeous, or over-cooked and teeth-cracking.
“Is that tablet homemade?” I ask, a perfectly reasonable question.
“Em, yes,” says the cheery lad behind the counter.
“And is it any good?”
Before he has a chance to reply, an older bloke who’s also milling around behind the counter, pipes up.
“No. It’s terrible,” he says.
Look, matey. If anyone’s going to be sarcastic, it’s me.
Luckily, he’s got a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye so it’s clear it’s meant in jest.
The scone is as good as it looks.
But I hope you’re sitting down for this next bit. Because, in a Scone Spy first, I can’t finish it.
That’s no reflection on the superb scone. I’m just too full.
Before I know it, a waiter appears and asks if I’d like it bagged up to take home.
And he wraps it up and pops it into a little brown bag.
My companion has a slice of lemon drizzle. And they manage to polish off the lot. It’s gone so quickly it’s practically inhaled.
Louie Brown’s is all things to all men. And ladies who lunch. And kids. It’s got a pub section, with screens showing sport and a lively Saturday night crowd.
I’m sure it’s great for the young ’uns. It’s got a terrace for sitting out in the sunshine – so this being Scotland, it probably doesn’t see as much action as the other sections.
Me? I much prefer the quieter atmosphere of its coffee shop.
It’s a lovely place to meet friends and family and while away an afternoon – you should give it a go.
Make sure you don’t miss the tablet. That bloke doesn’t half talk some rubbish.
