Two Scottish bartenders have been named as two of five UK regional finalists in an international cocktail competition curated by Caorunn Gin.
Declan Coffey, who lives in Edinburgh and Jack Docherty from Uddingston are now set to compete in the competition final in New York City this July.
Declan is a bartender at Bramble, a hidden Edinburgh city bar known for its cocktails and live music. His winning cocktail was ‘Verdant Tuxedo,’ a play on the classic tuxedo cocktail inspired by Scottish flavours to make a martini style drink.
Jack is a batender at Alston Bar and Beef, a restaurant and gin bar home to over 100 gins. His winning cocktail was ‘The Chicago Clansman,’ a quirky, pizza-inspired cocktail, capturing a different kind essence of a traditional tomato-based cocktail.
To mark their 10-year anniversary, Caorunn Gin created the 10-year-switch, an international cocktail competition to give bartenders across the UK and USA a once in a lifetime opportunity to build their personal profile by showcasing their cocktail creativity to the world.
Paloma Alos, Managing Director of Difford’s Guide, one of the world’s largest and most visited drinks guides, was a key judge for the five regional finals in the UK, alongside Caorunn Gin Master, Simon Buley.
On the cocktail creations, she noted: “It was tough to choose a winner in both Edinburgh and Glasgow following some inventive cocktail creations presented by four talented local bartenders.
“It was the incredible creativity, distinctiveness and of course the taste of both Declan’s and Jack’s creations which shone through and left you wanting another – always a good sign of a delicious cocktail!”
The five hand-picked finalists from each UK city will be flown to New York City to compete in the international final on July 31.
