A DEBATE at Holyrood on a second independence referendum has been suspended following the Westminster attacks.
The debate, which was taking place ahead of a scheduled vote on the issue this evening, was finally halted after mounting calls from MSPs.
Deputy presiding officer Linda Fabiani had earlier notified MSPs that suspension had been considered but the decision was made to ‘carry on with business as usual’.
The deputy presiding officer said: “There are reports of an incident at Westminster.
“Details are still emerging and parliamentary authorities are liaising with Police Scotland and are keeping security under review at Holyrood.
“We will update Members when we have a clearer pictures.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Parliament said: “We are aware of a developing situation at Westminster this afternoon and are monitoring matters very closely.
“While there is no intelligence to suggest there is a specific threat to Scotland, Edinburgh or Holyrood we have increased security with immediate effect at the Scottish Parliament as a precaution.
“In the meantime, we would ask all building users to be vigilant whilst going about business and also when leaving or coming to parliament.”
After the suspension, SNP minister Humza Yousaf tweeted: “Holyrood suspended out of respect for our sister Parliament and all that’s going on in Westminster. Thoughts with all down the road.”
Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson tweeted: “Very pleased that sense has won the day & Holyrood has been suspended until we have a better understanding of what is going on in WM.”
Scottish Greens leader Patrick Harvie said: “Carrying on business at Holyrood wouldn’t be appropriate; we’ve suspended out of concern for all affected by the incident at Westminster.”
