VISITORS to Glasgow’s Silverburn and Aberdeen’s Union Square shopping centres will now face ‘random cursory bag searches’.
The centres, both owned by Hammerson Property, insisted there was no specific threat and that the security measures were a precaution after recent attacks in Manchester and London.
A spokesperson said: “We would like to make customers aware that our security team is conducting random cursory bag searches today.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you in advance for your cooperation.
“It is important to note that this measure does not relate to any specific threat, but is part of our enhanced security procedures following recent events.
“The safety of our customers remains our number one priority.
“Customers should remain alert but not alarmed, and should report anything suspicious to the police.”
The centre operators confirmed on their Union Square Facebook page that security staff would be conducting the searches, but only with the individual’s consent.
They also told concerned shoppers that they would not be refused entry if they did not agree to a search.
