ROLLING hills and moorland, gentle valleys and iconic historic locations to explore, the Scottish Borders are the perfect place for a getaway and are home to some of Scotland’s most beautiful hotels. Here, the Good Hotel Guide shares six of the best hotels in the Scottish Borders…
Chirnside Hall, Chirnside
A small country-house hotel in the Scottish Borders, Chirnside Hall is an elegant hotel featuring beautiful 19th century architecture. Built in 1834, it’s the epitome of relaxation with roaring open fires and views of the Cheviot Hills. It’s a secluded spot, perfect for whiling away the afternoon with a good book but equally it’s a convenient drive from the shops and sights of Edinburgh and Newcastle.
The Wheatsheaf, Swinton
A cosy, stone-built roadside inn, The Wheatsheaf is an award-winning restaurant with comfortable, country-style accommodation, popular both locals and visitors. Homemade shortbread sets the tone for your visit while the tartan-walled lounge and its open fire make for cosy evenings reliving country walks. A selection of malt whiskies is readily available, and for summer evenings the small beer garden is a delight.
Horseshoe Restaurant, Peebles
A sophisticated restaurant-with-rooms, Horseshoe Restaurant is all about doing things well. In a tiny village a few miles north of Peebles, the former inn is all snug alcoves, flagstone floors, and elegant dining, serving a modern menu showcasing Scottish produce. Eyemouth crab, Shetland fish and Scottish lamb are regular features along with vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden. Breakfast features local honey and home-made jams, and in between all that eating you can head out for walks in the spectacular surroundings – you can even bring the dog.
Burt’s, Melrose
A well established hotel in this charming town in the Scottish Borders, Burt’s is owned by the Henderson family and does everything to make guests feel cared for. Traditional furnishings are brought to life with jazzy splashes of colour, meals are a casual but excellently presented Scottish affair, and when you’re not spending time at the hotel, there’s an abundance of fish and game waiting for you to catch them within a stone’s throw of the hotel.
The Townhouse, Melrose
Warm, welcoming and decorated in contemporary style, The Townhouse is a 20-room boutique hotel in the town of Melrose in the Scottish Borders. There are two dining areas at the hotel, The Brasserie for relaxed lunches, and The Restaurant for a more formal setting. Meanwhile, the location places you in the perfect spot for pottering about or heading off on greater adventures, walking, hiking or visiting local hotspots such as Abbotsford House, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott, or Melrose Abbey.
Allanton Inn, Allanton
Surrounded by the conservation village of Allanton, Allanton Inn is an 18th century coaching inn that’s been turned into a caring and welcoming hotel run by its current owners since 2010. Small and informal, the inn has seven bedrooms and a relaxed dining space, facilities are modern and comfortable, but it is the customer service that sets it apart as a joy to visit.
