MSP Patrick Harvie has called for an end to ‘fetishising privilege’ in the wake of the birth of the royal baby.
A Holyrood motion, lodged by Tory MSP Alexander Stewart, congratulated the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the birth of their third child yesterday.
But Mr Harvie added an amendment, also congratulating the “thousands of children born in the UK on the same day.”
Inevitably, it was a Tory MSP who won the race to lodge the first obsequious motion in awe of the royal baby. So I thought I'd lodge an amendment, helpfully pointing out the context. pic.twitter.com/AGfc2K3CLE
The Greens co-convener went on to state that an estimated 30% of those born would be born into poverty.
He concluded: “the scandalous level of poverty and inequality in society is unlikely to be corrected until politicians and media outlets stop fetishising privilege and fawning over those who enjoy it.”
