MORE than 90% of communities, homes and businesses are now connected by fibre broadband around Scotland.
The £428 million Digital Scotland Superfast Broadband scheme is on track to meet its 95% coverage target by the end of the year.
More than 800,000 premises in Scotland can now access super-fast broadband, following 34,000 connections over the last six months.
The announcement comes after a Which? survey recently found that the majority of households have experienced problems with their broadband in the past year.
Far too many people are ‘getting a poor deal’ from their broadband provider say Which?
Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said: “Fast internet connection is vital to the economic and social well-being of our rural communities, supporting businesses and improving lives of local people.
“Last year we made faster progress than any other part of the UK and we are on-track to meet our Programme for Government commitment of 95% coverage by the end of this year.
“I am not complacent – I am aware that those who do not have access are at a disadvantage and our job is not done until everyone is connected.
“We are now focusing on the next steps to achieve 100% coverage by 2021.”
Robert Thorburn, Openreach digital partnership director for Scotland, said it was “fantastic” to be able to reach smaller communities.
