Barely a month after I was last in the lovely village of Braemar and I’m back for a second helping!
Despite being a small village within the Cairngorms National Park, Braemar is not short on exciting and quality eateries, unsurprising, as the place is so popular with tourists.
This time, having been on holiday nearby, I pay a visit to The Bothy, Braemar, a warm and welcoming cafe that sits right above the Clunie Water.
Inside is bright and spacious yet cosy thanks to a wood-burning stove.
For the warmer months, or those willing to brave the cold in return for a spectacular view, there’s an outdoor, split-level deck.
Tables here and in an additional enclosed area specifically for those with dogs, offer a wonderful view of the crashing river rapids below as it snakes towards the River Dee, and distant majestic mountains.
As it’s a chilly January afternoon, we pick a window table inside that looks out towards the village.
And waiting for our lunch to arrive, we’re lucky to spot a red squirrel scampering around the car park and off across the road to a nearby tree.
Our meal arrives not long after that rare sighting. I ordered the soup and panini combo, which paired broccoli, pea and potato soup with a roasted vegetable panini.
The food is a little pricey here but the large portions, quality and flavour ensure it is money well spent. My soup is delicious, fresh and comforting, so much so that I’m determined to try replicating it at home. The panini is equally delicious and served with a side salad.
Afterwards, I order a plain scone. I’m delighted to see it served with a miniature jar of Bon Maman Raspberry jam and a wee pot of clotted cream.
While the outside is firm with a tender crunch, within is soft, light and sweet with a texture that is verging on cake-like. Paired with the jam and cream, it is heaven on a plate.
No wonder the royals like to hang out near Braemar, its scone scene is fit for a king!
Scone score
Soft, light, sweet, fruity and utterly delicious. 9/10
