The well-priced table d’hote or fixed menu offers a good selection of tasty dishes with two courses for £19.50 or three for £25.
Location
In prime position on George Street, home to some of the capital’s most popular shops, restaurants and bars.
First Impressions
Dating back to the mid-1800s, this former bank has a stately Greco-Roman façade and Corinthian portico. The interior brims with stylish opulence. We dined in the Grill Room, with its ornate and flower festooned central bar and awe-inspiring dome.
Service
Impeccable. The waiting staff, smartly attired in white shirts, black waistcoats and matching aprons, exhibit the highest degree of care and professionalism.
Menu
The a la carte menu offered wonderful choices of starters and mains, a delicious desert selection and super vegan options.
Taste
Off the scale delicious, with Buffalo Farm Scottish mozzarella and heritage tomatoes, balsamic shallots, followed by pan-fried chicken breast, wild mushrooms, asparagus, fondant potato and tarragon jus.
The starter was the perfect light entrée for the chicken dish that was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The mushrooms were fresh and flavoursome and the tarragon added piquancy.
The finale was a feast of warm chocolate brownie, coconut ice cream, caramelised mango and cardamom (a surprisingly scrumptious vegan option). However, the Sunday Roast is a tempting option and a reason to return.
Ambience
Heavenly. It may be grand (even the loos have chandeliers), but it is friendly, warm and welcoming, with a cosmopolitan vibe.
Price
Given the location, ambience, flawless service and fine cuisine, the price at around £60 per head with a glass or two of Champagne, was less than I had anticipated.
