More than 50 years ago, The Sunday Post started a column where readers could write in with tips for running a household.
These little nuggets of knowledge – life hacks as they’d probably be known today – were a mix of the useful and the dubious.
Today, many are delightfully dated, but could some of them be relevant to the modern household?
To explore this fascinating capsule of social history, forgotten knowledge, gender expectations and more, the Pass It On podcast has been launched.

Our host is Connie, the modern equivalent of the generation who wrote in to Pass It On.
She’s joined by the author of the books based on the column, Steve, who’s of a generation to remember these tips in use.
Between them in age is Chris, and though the tips themselves are the starting point, they’re just an excuse to explore changing attitudes to housekeeping, gender equality, privilege, thrift, throwaway culture, and more.
I love that @ThePassItOnPod is taking venerable content from the @Sunday_Post archives and using it for something new, a podcast. It’s especially pleasing that it’s of a type – ‘user-generated content’ – that sounds very 21st Century, yet it was generated last century. pic.twitter.com/j14IaxasmJ
