With over 400 years of history, The Globe Inn in Dumfries is well known as a regular haunt of Robert Burns. However, in recent years it’s not only the Burns connection that’s been drawing in patrons.
Exceptional food and casual fine dining have now become the reason many visit the Bard’s ‘favourite howff’ on High Street, with the eatery achieving a coveted recommendation in the prestigious Michelin Guide.
As Burns night approaches, it seemed apt timing to talk to Lee Medd, group marketing, PR and training manager for Annandale Distillery who took ownership of the Globe Inn in 2019, to discover how this historic inn is gaining an enviable reputation in both the Scottish and UK food scene.
Promising incredible dining alongside a truly unique atmosphere and history, The Globe Inn offers the perfect excuse to visit Dumfries. Lee told us: “The Globe’s becoming a destination for diners, and not just from Dumfries and Galloway and the south of Scotland.
“Since the listing in the Michelin Guide, people have been coming from all over to discover and enjoy what we do here. There really is nowhere else quite like it in the south of Scotland. To be able to have this amazing Michelin quality food and the historic interest of Burns really is unique.”
Casual fine dining in a unique setting
The menus for both lunch and dinner spoil you with local, seasonal, gastronomic delights, and the evening Degustation menu lets you experience the creative prowess of the chefs over seven stunning courses with canapés, amuse-bouche, homemade bread and petit fours to finish.
Lee explained: “What’s really exciting is we know the provenance of everything on the menu. When it comes to the Galloway beef, we know which farm it came from which could be just 20 miles along the road from The Globe itself.
“It’s quality food that envelopes all the senses. Of course, the food looks lovely, but when you get the richness of the red wine jus and the full taste of the fresh veg, it encapsulates everything to make it a proper experience.”
Fine food full of flavour
The driving force behind the exciting dishes the Michelin Guide described as ‘creative, modern, and full of colour and flavour’ is executive chef Jonathan Brett and senior sous chef Fraser Cameron.
Lee told us more about The Globe’s formidable food duo: “Our executive chef Jonathan Brett previously worked with Andrew Fairley, and Fraser Cameron, our senior sous chef, has twice been the Scottish Young Chef of the Year. They both have amazing experience, including Michelin experience, so it’s really exciting to have them.
“They push each other to the limit as to how far they can go and what they can create. That’s something people probably wouldn’t expect in Dumfries and Galloway. We want to create a destination for the finest food you can find anywhere.
“Having the experience of Jonathan coupled with the enthusiasm, skill and new ideas of Fraser, the two of them create amazing dishes that showcase both what they can do and the amazing food and produce we have in the south-west of Scotland.”
Special events at The Globe Inn
Allowing the chefs to flex their creative muscles, The Globe also hosts monthly events. These range from showcasing local produce to one-off set menus, or sometimes something a little more experimental.
“Our guests that have come and experienced our events love them,” said Lee. “Many come back time and time again.
“At the end of the night when the chefs come out to the dining room, the reception they receive is incredible. It’s something special, we’re lucky to have them both.”
Celebrate Burns at his favourite inn
With Burns night only days away, where better to spend January 25 than within the same walls that Rabbie Burns ate, drank, recited, caroused and conducted a passionate love affair?
Lee told us more: “We are hosting a Burns Celebration which is a five-course meal with entertainment from our local piper and ‘well kenned Burnsian’ Callum Watson. There is also a performance from Rose Byers, one of the world’s finest young Burns performers.
“We are also holding a special Burns whisky tasting lunch which is on January the 27th. All our events can be booked online. You can stay up to date with future events via our website, Facebook or Instagram.”
Owned by the local Annandale Distillery, you’d expect an impressive bar, and The Globe certainly doesn’t disappoint. “We’ve got fine food and an amazing history,” says Lee, “but we’ve also got an incredible range of beverages to go along with it.
“Yes, we have the Annandale single cast single malts behind the bar, but we also have over 320 different whiskies from all over Scotland. You might need more than one night to experience everything that’s on offer!”
That’s fine with us. Give us any excuse to visit to The Globe Inn, and, well, we’ll take it!
Booking is recommended for evenings, however lunches (12 noon – 2.30pm) can usually be accommodated without prior booking. Book your table online.
