Mrs May said: “It is and will always remain a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit. “It is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to lead that effort.” By the end of her statement, Mrs May’s voice broke and she was close to tears. “I have enormous and enduring gratitude to have served the country I love,” she said.
